Andersen won't announce starting QB before LSU game

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Late last week Wisconsin head coach Gary Andersen had said he thought after the team's second scrimmage of fall camp the coaches may be ready to name a starting quarterback. That didn't mean he'd make it public. Most of the scrimmage Monday was closed to the media, which wasn't the only thing Andersen kept from reporters.

"We may know who the starter is [at quarterback], but we're not going to say who the starter is until we jog out on the field for the LSU game," Andersen said.

"There's no big announcement. Don't make a big announcement for the right tackle. Don't make a big announcement for the starting nose guard. So, we're not going to do that for the quarterback either."

Andersen may not have named his starting quarterback, but he seemed to give a strong hint to reporters who have seen Joel Stave run with the first-team offense for much of the week.

"You can probably sit down and watch practice and see the direction it's headed, but I just don't think it needs to come across the wire because we name a starting quarterback, so we'll just keep it in those lines."

At the time he spoke to reporters, Andersen said a decision had not yet been made, but that he would sit down with offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig to make the decision in the coming days.
