Dozens of cows killed in Barron Co. fire

Posted: Updated:
BARRON CO. (WKOW) -- Dozens of cattle are dead and a barn is destroyed after a fire early Monday morning in Barron County.

A passerby spotted flames around 4:30 a.m., but according to the fire chief on scene the barn had already caved in by the time firefighters arrived. More than 60 cows were killed, the barn was destroyed and one firefighter had minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but is not considered suspicious.

While Barron firefighters were fighting that fire they got called to another fire, this time time at a Barron business.

Flames broke out in a kiln owned by Bell Timber, a company which treats and dries telephone poles. The 90-foot long kiln, filled with hundreds of telephone poles, was destroyed.

Nearby buildings owned by the company were not affected and no one was hurt. The cause of that fire is also still under investigation.
