Badgers lineman playing for his mother

MADISON (WKOW) - Kyle Costigan's job as the Badgers right guard is to protect those on his side. However, on Valentine's Day there was nothing Costigan could do when he received a phone call from his sister delivering some bad news about his mother Sandy.

"My sister called me and said she had stage four cancer. She told me on the phone. She was crying. It was just a really emotional time. She's my mom. She's my favorite person in the world. Obviously, hearing that was the worst news you could get."

Costigan was left feeling empty. He pondered whether he should continue with the sport that keeps him away from family. Then, his mom told him there was only one option.

"I mean football is his whole life. I would be totally, totally crushed if he even missed a game because of me. That's not going to happen."

What has happened is the emergence of overwhelming support within the Wind Lake and Badger communities. Friends of the Costigans have now raised $13,000 to help pay for her cancer treatments by contributing to the website: http://www.gofundme.com/sandysangels.

"I pray that I live long enough to somehow, somehow pay everybody back and thank them," says Sandy.

While his mother battles her disease, Costigan has been dealing with his own pain back in Madison. He says his team has helped lift his spirits.

"Some of the guys that you talked to once or twice before and they come up and put their arm around you and say, 'Hey man, I'm sorry to hear about it.' It's unbelievable how the whole community can rally around you."

Now, Kyle is playing with a new purpose. He's not only playing for Wisconsin but also for his mom. Kyle's biggest fan is hoping to see her son play in person a few more times at Camp Randall.

"I pray that he can just enjoy this last year and not think about me. I'm praying that at least I can come to two home games but we'll see."
