Decorated war hero from WI dies in Afghanistan

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WKOW) -- An Army paratrooper born in Wisconsin has died while serving in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense says Sgt. First Class Matthew Leggett died Wednesday, but wouldn't release details about what happened. Relatives tell Daily Tribune Media the 39-year-old was born in Wisconsin Rapids and still has extended family in the area. Sgt. First Class Leggett served with the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

Leggett's father grew up in Nekoosa, according to a cousin, and also had a career in the military. Matthew Leggett enlisted in the Army in 1995 and served three combat tours. He received numerous awards and decorations, including a Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat.
