Badgers soccer team falls to high-flying Irish in final exhibition

Posted: Updated:
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Christopher Mueller continued the preseason trend of freshmen goal scorers, but the No. 21 Wisconsin men's soccer team fell 5-1 to No. 1 Notre Dame in an exhibition match at Alumni Stadium in Notre Dame, Indiana, on Monday night.
Mueller led the Badgers with a team-high three shots, including two shots on goal, but the Irish scored two goals in the first half and followed up with three more scores in the second frame to claim the final exhibition for both teams this preseason.
Through three exhibitions this preseason, four different UW freshmen have scored. Tom Barlow found net in the team's win over the University of Illinois-Chicago, then Mike Catalano and Nikola Atlija each scored goals for the Badgers against Creighton. Mueller made it four different freshmen goals in three exhibition matches on Friday.
Fellow freshman Adrian Remeniuk made his third-consecutive start at goalkeeper for the Badgers, making three saves in 69 minutes of work.
Notre Dame got off to a quick start, as Leon Brown scored in the 5th minute. Patrick Hodan made it a 2-0 lead for the Irish, scoring in the 28th minute. Evan Panken, Brandon Aubrey and Jon Gallagher added on scores in the second half.
The Badgers reached double-digit shots with 10, including four shots on goal, but were unable to match the offensive flurry from the Irish.
Connor Revsbeck relieved Remeniuk in the second half at goalkeeper, finishing with one save in just over 20 minutes of action.
Wisconsin returns home and opens the regular season Friday hosting the University of San Francisco at the McClimon Soccer Complex. The match will be part of the annual PAC the MAC event and is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
