Expectations high for season opener as Warhawks look to defend national championship

WHITEWATER, Wis. (WKOW) -- To say the expectations are high for the UW-Whitewater football team would be an understatement.

The Warhawks open the season against Waldorf Friday night at Perkins Stadium. Whitewater is riding a 17-game winning streak which includes claiming their fifth division three national title in seven years.

The Warhawks are the unanimous number one ranked team in the country. Still, players are not focused on the expectations.

"Last year was last year, you know," said senior quarterback Matt Behrendt. "We have a new Warhawk team this year, and I'm just excited to see what this 2014 Warhawk football team can do.

"It's a new season and we just have to try to get better at what we're doing and take it a week at a time," said head coach Lance Leipold. "I know that's cliche, but that's really what you have to do. And our conference is so competitive that if we look ahead or do something, we'll be left out of it like we were in 2012."
