Badgers volleyball blows by Hurricanes in home opener, improves to 6-0

Posted: Updated:
MADISON, Wis. – The No. 4-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team was glad to be home Friday night, toppling Miami (4-3) in its first match of the season, the opening round of the HotelRED in the UW Field House.

The Badgers' 25-12, 25-15, 25-19 triumph brings the team's season record to 6-0.

"I thought we handled the pregame stuff well, starting about 40 minutes late and the banner stuff,” head coach Kelly Sheffield said. “Sometimes the match actually has to take precedence and I thought it did with us. I thought when it was time for the first serve that we were ready to go, and that's great that you have a team that's able to get locked in when they need to get locked in.

“We did a lot of positives tonight. I thought we were pretty good on the serve and pass game. I thought they got a lot tougher with their serve in game three and we tried to lock down ourselves. We made some mental errors there in game three, but I thought overall it was a good team effort."

After dropping a banner honoring their 2013 NCAA national runner-up finish, the Badgers came out hot, scoring four straight points before Miami could get on the board. Wisconsin would never relinquish the lead, recording a .469 attack percentage (17 kills – 4 errors – 32 attempts) before taking the first set 25-11. Freshman Kelli Bates tallied eight kills and redshirt senior Dominique Thompson went 5-0-5 for a perfect attack percentage.

The Hurricanes managed just six kills in 30 attempts during the first period, hitting just .033.

Miami tried to battle back in the second set but the Badger defense held off the push, as Wisconsin marked 16 digs and three team blocks to hold the Hurricanes to just nine kills. Bates and junior Taylor Morley led the Badgers with six digs each while Thompson's two blocks in the period brought her career total to 300.

Wisconsin led 18-13 in the third set before the Hurricanes rallied to pull within two (19-17). A UW time out stopped the Miami rally as the Badgers outscored the Hurricanes 6-2 to claim the sweep. Senior Courtney Thomas, who received Big Ten Player of the Week honors last week, propelled her career kill total past the 700 mark with two kills in the period and six on the night. Sophomore Raleigh Nelson served her third ace of the night, breaking her previous career-high ace record of two.

The Hurricane offense pushed harder in the final set, hitting 14 kills on 37 attempts for an attack percentage of .234.

Bates had 14 kills on the night, breaking her previous career-high kill record of 13, to lead all players. Nelson and Thompson added eight and seven kills, respectively, as all six starters put away four-or-more kills.

Sophomore Lauren Carline ran the Badger offense, tallying 35 assists while adding nine digs and four blocks in the victory.

Junior Taylor Morley led all players with 11 digs while Thomas also added nine digs.

Wisconsin continues its play in the HotelRED Invitational on Saturday, facing Missouri State at noon before taking on Ball State at 7:30 p.m. at the UW Field House.
