Dayne, UW athletics announce "Ron Dayne Community Champions Program"

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (UW Athletics) -- Giving back to the community is part of a rich Wisconsin tradition. Since the very beginning, UW Athletics has made a commitment to improving the community and bettering the lives of our fans. We feel very fortunate that our fans are equally committed to bettering the place we all call home. The Ron Dayne Community Champions program aims to identify and recognize community members who have gone above and beyond to serve the community and inspire change. UW Athletics will recognize one outstanding volunteer each month from September to April.

UW Athletics is looking to highlight the work of Community Champions who have demonstrated the following:

  • A passion for advancing a cause that enriches the lives of others
  • A significant and special impact on the community by going "above and beyond" to serve others and inspire change
  • Extensive selflessness and dedication to advancing a cause that betters the lives of others, with special attention to the areas of education, mentorship, providing assistance in time of crisis or illness and health and wellness.
  • Selected Community Champions will receive:
  • Recognition at a UW Athletics event: Community Champions will be recognized on-field at football games in September-November, and on the Kohl Center floor from December-April.
  • Lunch or dinner with Heisman trophy winner Ron Dayne
  • Photo opportunity with Dayne and the Heisman Trophy
  • A commemorative Community Champion plaque
  • A private tour of Camp Randall Stadium or the Kohl Center by Ron Dayne
  • Four (4) tickets to the sporting event at which they will be recognized
About Ron: Ron Dayne knows a thing or two about excellence, both on and off the field. The 1999 Heisman trophy winner secured his name in Wisconsin Football history by leading the Badgers to two Big Ten titles and Rose Bowl victories. After finishing his career has college football's all-time leading rusher, Dayne was drafted in the first round of the 2000 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Dayne played seven years in the NFL before retiring and returning to Madison. During his career, Dayne dedicated extensive time to charity, placing a special emphasis on initiatives involving the mentorship of children. Dayne was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 2011 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013.

"My time at the University of Wisconsin had a great impact on me. The opportunities I've had to give back to the community helped me grow as an individual and feel at home in Wisconsin. I loved my time and the people here so much, I couldn't imagine living anywhere else after my NFL career. The Wisconsin fans and community have welcomed me from the very beginning and there have been so many people that have been supportive of me throughout the years. The community champions program is a small token of my appreciation for all of the support I have received. I look forward to meeting our community champions and thanking them for their efforts to improve the place I am proud to call home." - Ron Dayne
