Longtime local sports writer Tom Mulhern dies

MADISON (WKOW) -

 Longtime local sports reporter Tom Mulhern died Friday after a brief battle with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The Wisconsin State Journal veteran was just 56 years old.

Mulhern was best known in recent years for his work covering the Badgers football team. The Madison native was named Sportswriter of the Year in Wisconsin in 2005 and 2010.

A scholarship has been set up in his honor. The Tom Mulhern Scholarship for Sports Journalism will be handed out at the UW-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
