Kaminsky, Wisconsin tabbed as Big Ten favorites

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO, Ill. – Wisconsin senior Frank Kaminsky was named Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year by a vote of the league's media, the conference office announced Thursday. The Big Ten also released media picks for the top three finishers in league play, which features Wisconsin as the preseason favorite.

Kaminsky is the third Badger to be named conference preseason player of the year. The 7-foot Lisle, Illinois, native joins only Alando Tucker, tabbed prior to the 2006-07 season, and Devin Harris, who drew the preseason accolade prior to the 2003-04 season.

Both Harris and Tucker went on to turn their preseason nominations into postseason Big Ten Player of the Year awards that season.

Kaminsky was also named to the preseason all-conference team, the only player to earn unanimous selection. He is joined by teammate and junior forward Sam Dekker, along with Indiana's Yogi Ferrell, Michigan's Caris LeVert and Terran Petteway of Nebraska.

It's the first time Wisconsin has had two players named to the preseason all-conference team. Dekker and Kaminsky mark the ninth and 10th players under head coach Bo Ryan to earn preseason all-conference team selection.

The 10 preseason all-conference honors in the Ryan era are second only to Michigan State (11). Indiana has had nine nominees during that time span, while Illinois and Michigan have each had eight and Ohio State has had seven.

The Big Ten Conference also released media picks for the top three finishers in league play, which featured Wisconsin at No. 1. The Badgers are followed by Michigan State at No. 2 and Ohio State at No. 3.

It marks Wisconsin's first-ever preseason No. 1 ranking under Ryan. The Badgers have been in the top three of the preseason rankings six times during Ryan's tenure.

Seven of UW's top eight scorers from last season are set to return for the 2014-15 campaign, led by preseason All-Americans Kaminsky and Dekker. The Badgers also bring back the veteran backcourt duo of seniors Josh Gasser and Traevon Jackson, as well as Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year Nigel Hayes. Duje Dukan enters his final season at UW, while Bronson Koenig returns looking to make a jump after his successful freshman campaign.

Wisconsin officially opens the season with an exhibition game against UW-Parkside on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Kohl Center. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. The Badgers' official season opener is on Nov. 14 against Northern Kentucky and will include a special commemorative ceremony to honor the 2014 Final Four team.
