Desmond Howard weighs in on Gordon's Heisman hopes

MADISON (WKOW) -

Melvin Gordon is certainly doing everything he can to put himself in the Heisman Trophy conversation. The Badgers running back is leading the nation in rushing at 174.3 yards per game. He also leads the nation in scoring at 14.0 points per contest. Yet, Gordon is not leading most Heisman lists. Former Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard says the University of Wisconsin needs to launch an extensive public relations campaign to get Gordon in the mix.

"I think Melvin Gordon is a phenomenal talent. I think he's having an extraordinary season. I don't know if people nationally are aware of just how talented this young man is and how great of a running back. Obviously, it's heavy competition. You're going up against teams who are getting greater exposure because they're undefeated. So, once you're going up against teams like that, you have a couple of losses, you have to do the best you can to get your candidate's name in the mix."

Gordon has rushed for 217 yards per game over his past four contests with 12 touchdowns. If he can keep up that pace, he should continue to climb the Heisman rankings.

The Badgers host Maryland on Saturday at 11 a.m.
