Badger volleyball earns No. 4 seed in NCAA tournament

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin volleyball team has earned the highest NCAA tournament seed in program history as the Badgers were selected as the No. 4 overall seed in the championship bracket on Sunday night. UW will host first-round and second-round matches on Thursday-Friday in the UW Field House.

Marquette (24-8) and Illinois State (26-5) play the opening match on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. while Wisconsin takes on Western Michigan (22-13) in the second match at 7:30 p.m. Winners will advance to the second-round match on Friday at 7 p.m. The second-round winner advances to the Louisville Regional on Dec. 12-13.

“We're excited to be playing back in the Field House,” head coach Kelly Sheffield said. “Hopefully we'll be able to pack both of those matches.

“Its three really good teams, everyone is good when you get into the tournament. These are three teams that have a lot of success coming to Madison so hopefully it will be a great show.”

All-session ticket packages for the first and second-rounds will go on sale at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. Only all-session tickets (three matches) are available in advance with single-session tickets on sale on Thursday at 8:30 a.m.

The Badgers are 34-17 (.644) in 17 NCAA tournament appearances. Wisconsin has hosted first and second-round matches 14 times, including in 2013 when it defeated Milwaukee in the first round and California in the second round. UW advanced to the NCAA championship match last season, losing to Penn State, 3-1, in the final contest.

“There's no easy one when the brackets come out but it's not supposed to be easy,” said Sheffield of his team's path to the NCAA championship in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. “We have tough teams in our pod and the others look pretty challenging as well. We have to focus on what's in front of us and get our team ready for the next match.”
