Badgers stampede Broncos in NCAA volleyball first-round match

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin volleyball team won its NCAA first-round match against Western Michigan, sweeping the Broncos 25-9, 26-24, 25-10 on Thursday night at the UW Field House.

Lauren Carlini paced the UW offense with 33 assists and tied a career-high with 20 digs. It marks her 15th double-double of the season.

The Badgers hit .327 (46 kills -9 errors -113 attempts), marking the 17th time this season UW has hit over .300. UW held Western Michigan to a .053 attack percentage (28-22-114).

Wisconsin collected six of its nine blocks in the final frame and outblocked the Broncos 9-4.

Haleigh Nelson and Ellen Chapman led the Badger attack with 11 kills, while Courtney Thomas added nine. Nelson added a match-high seven blocks

The Badgers outdug the Broncos 56-48 as Taylor Morey added 11 saves.

Wisconsin faces Illinois State in the second round in a 7 p.m. tilt at the UW Field House.
