Alvarez will remember Gordon as "the best back that ever came through here"

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Barry Alvarez certainly raised some eyebrows when asked how he would remember running back Melvin Gordon, who will declare for the NFL Draft after the Outback Bowl.

"l'll remember him as probably the best back that ever came through here," Alvarez said of Gordon.

"That's saying a lot, but he can do it all. He combines power with great burst, he can make you miss. He's one of a kind."

That's saying a lot alright. Especially for a guy who coached Ron Dayne. With Dayne on his team, Alvarez and the Badgers won two Big Ten titles and two Rose Bowls. Dayne still holds the FBS career rushing record (7125 yards), and won the 1999 Heisman Trophy.

Gordon has certainly made his case though, putting together the best season in Wisconsin history. Gordon set the Wisconsin single-season (2336 yards right now) and single game (408 yards) rushing records this year, both records previously held by Dayne.

WKOW sat down with Dayne on November 21, 2014, and Dayne was asked "who is the best running back in Wisconsin history."

"All the running backs? Me. I'm taking that," Dayne said last month.

"I definitely can't pass that to nobody else. I'm going to hold that in. Sorry to feel conceited or anything like that, but I feel like I am the best running back in Wisconsin history."

As so begins the great debate.
