Legendary coach Petitgoue eyes 874th win, another championship season

CUBA CITY, Wis. -- When the Cuba City boys basketball team hosts Boscobel Thursday night, head coach Jerry Petitgoue will be looking for his 874th career win.

Coaching high school teams for 52 years, he's by far the winningest coach in state history. Forty-four of those years Petitgoue has spent as head coach of the Cubans.

Petitgoue says he is proud of the wins he has amassed but perhaps more proud of the consistency he has had over the years. In 34 of the last 35 years, his teams have finished with at least 15 wins, as well as brought home a few state championships.

This season, the Cubans are 10-2 overall, and ranked third in the Southwest Wisconsin conference, at 5-2.

While his love for the game has remained unchanged, there are certain aspects of coaching that become more difficult with each passing season.

"Maybe the thing that's getting a little old is the school bus," said Petitgoue. "The rides seem to get a little rougher, 25 below zero wind chill factor. So, the bus rides get a little long."

Petitgoue tried throwing in the towel on coaching several times in recent years but says he has no plans of slowing down now.

"People say, 'when are you going to retire?' And I say, 'I am retired,'" Petitgoue said. "This is my 13th year now I've been out of the classroom. I just say this is my hobby. I enjoy doing it, and we still win once in a while, so why not."
