WAUNAKEE (WKOW) -

When Paul Chryst took over the Badgers football program just two months ago, one of his recruiting priorities was to stake a claim to the state. He did that by signing 14 in-state products in his first recruiting class. Three of those athletes are from the Madison area.

Linebacker Ty Deforest of Marshall enrolled early to get a jump start on his collegiate career. He'll be joined in the fall by Middleton's Mitchell Herl and Waunakee's Troy Laufenberg. Laufenberg decided to turn down some scholarship opportunities when Chryst offered him a chance to walk-on at Wisconsin.

"Yeah, it's a dream come true. It's a sigh of relief. We've dreamed of it since we were kids to play Division I football, to play for the Badgers, hometown just 15 minutes away. It's an accomplishment. Hard work paid off."
