Spartans prepare to defend four-time state boys swimming title

MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) -- The best high school boys swimmers and divers in the state are ready to make a splash in Madison this weekend at the WIAA State Championships at the UW Natatorium.

Madison Memorial will look to keep its crown in Division I on Saturday. The Spartans have won four straight state titles and 14 overall.

"It's something that, actually, the boys on the team, they really sort of embrace it," said head coach Paul Eckerle. "And they want to prove that this team is as good as previous teams and that we can try to keep it going."

Senior Ryan Menninga has won a title each of his years.

'"No one wants to end the streak, obviously, especially the senior class," Menninga said. "It's a little bit nerve-wracking. I've never been this nervous for state. But we're all ready for it. We're all ready to go out and swim our hardest and get our fifth [title]."

Memorial returns a couple of individual state champions, as well. So, the expectations are as high as usual.

"You never know," Eckerle said. "We feel we've got a really strong team again this year. So, the expectation of this team is to try to go out and be as good as previous teams have been. And if they can, they want to even be better."

"There's a lot of trying to be better than previous years," added Menninga. "It's just the desire to be the best team, not just this year but as of the last ten years or so."

Division I will compete on Saturday. Division II will compete Sunday.
