Gordon still working hard following combine

MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) -- Melvin Gordon doesn't have time to rest. As he prepares for the NFL draft, he knows every day is a chance to get better, and better his chances of being drafted in the first round.

Four days after Gordon worked out at the NFL Combine, he is back in the gym.

"I know there's some running back in my class working out right now," Gordon said. "I can't rest knowing they're out there grinding."

Since he began the off-season following his time at the University of Wisconsin, it has been another season of work.

"It sucks but you got to enjoy it," Gordon laughed.

Gordon has worked much of the time out in San Diego. Now back in Wisconsin, he spends his days at the Athletic Republic Gym in Kenosha.

The NFL Draft is just nine weeks away.

"Right now we're going in there to take someone's job," Gordon said. "And the guys' jobs we want to take are out there grinding right now."

Every year there are a number of talented running backs to go through the collegiate system; however, in the past two years, not one has been selected in the first round of the NFL draft. That fact has Gordon and some of the other backs determined to change the trend.

"Man it drives me," Gordon said. "I'm in a group message with a lot of running backs. It's been a goal of all of ours to make that change."

Gordon's attempt to influence that change began at the combine, where he ran a 4.52 second 40-yard dash and put up two solid shuttle times.

Still, as a competitor, Gordon was not content.

"I wish I could have did more," Gordon said. "You always have that feeling. You just want to go to the combine and kill it, but I feel like I did well enough to keep me where people won't bash me too much."

Soon, he hopes to deliver bashes and blows in the NFL, which is why Gordon continues on his grind.

"At the end of the road, your hard work is going to pay off" Gordon said. "I've been having dreams about getting my named called, and when that day finally gets here and I know where I'm going, I'm going to be so happy, just a weight lifted off my shoulders."
