Spartans fall in semifinals of boys state hockey tournament

MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) -- The last Madison area team left standing in the WIAA boys hockey state tournament was eliminated Friday night in the semifinals at Alliant Energy Center. Madison Memorial fell 6-3 to Wausau West, despite a third period rally.

The Spartans were trailing 3-0 in the third period when Riley Karns scored a short-handed goal 37 seconds in the period to cut the lead to two. Corey Dennis made it a one point game six minutes later.

But the Warriors did not give up. Cale Bowman and Alex Gessler scored two goals within five seconds of each other to put Wausau West ahead 5-2, a lead Madison Memorial was not able to over come.

Karns scored his second goal with less than four minutes remaining, but the Spartans gave up an empty net goal to give the Warriors a 6-3 win.

Wausau West will compete for the state championship Saturday against Superior.

This was Madison Memorial's 30th state tournament appearance in school history and first in eleven years.
