Rep. Chris Taylor at officer involved shooting in Madison

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- State Representative Chris Taylor (D) Madison says she heard the gunshots that lead to the shooting death of a Madison teenager.

Taylor says she helped passed legislation, so that in situations like this, there would have to be independent police investigations.  In this case, the evidence has been turned over to the Division of Criminal Investigation.

Taylor tells 27 News she pulled in a gas station on the other side of Williamson Street.  People warned her to stay in her car, so she crouched down.  That's when she says she heard the shots being fired.

The state representative sends her thoughts to the family, and she wants to be here for the community.  She continues, the Williamson Street area is a great community to live and that there really hasn't been a safety issue.

"Well I don't know that we have any more crime in this area than anywhere else," says Taylor.  "I think this is a real safe community and, you know, people are walking around outside... This is a community that is like a neighborhood, and people are very engaged, they're outside, they're going out to dinner, there's a lot of great restaurants here, so it's a great community."

The shooting incident happened Friday night around 6:30 p.m. after police were called to a disturbance on Williamson Street.
