Chief Koval apologizes about officer-involved shooting in blog post

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) – Madison Police chief Mike Koval expressed his feelings about Friday's officer-involved shooting in a blog post on the police department's website.

Officer Matt Kenny, a 12-year veteran of the Madison Police Department, is accused of shooting and killing 19-year-old Tony Robinson at an apartment on Williamson St. Friday night.

Koval says, in part, “Reconciliation cannot begin without my stating 'I am sorry,' and I don't think I can say this enough. I am sorry. I hope that, with time, Tony's family and friends can search their hearts to render some measure of forgiveness. Certainly, this will not take place soon given the circumstances. It may take some time for this loop to close but I pray that it will, in fact, close.”

Koval also mentions the investigation that is now underway with the state's Department of Criminal Investigation and the Dane County District Attorney's office. The Madison Police Department will conduct its own internal investigation into Officer Kenny.
