MADISON (WKOW) -- The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office has released preliminary autopsy results in the death of Tony Robinson, Jr.

Robinson was shot and killed by a Madison Police Officer March 6.

March 7, a forensic autopsy was completed and preliminary results show Robinson died as a result of gunshot wounds.  A spokesperson for the medical examiner says he suffered gunshot wounds to the head, torso and right upper extremity.  The autopsy summary does not include information on how many gunshots the teenage suspect absorbed.

Madison Police Chief Mike Koval says in deadly force situations, officers "...shoot to stop,"  not shoot to kill.  Koval says officers target body areas most likely to subdue a suspect if hit.  He says there are occasions when suspects have continued to pose a threat, even after being shot once.

The medical examiner's spokesperson says additional testing on Robinson, including toxicology, are underway and results are not expected for several weeks.

Koval says Officer Matt Kenny fatally shot the unarmed, 19 year old Robinson, after Robinson had punched Kenny in the head.  Robinson was a suspect in at least one assault.

State department of justice agents are investigating the incident.
