MADISON (WKOW) -- Melinda Myers has some tips on how to make the most out of your soil.
Measure your garden bed and cover the area with moist newspaper. Wet newspapers tend to stay in place even on windy days, but you should add a handful of soil just to be sure.
Add a 2-3" layer of peat moss or compost. Top this with 4-8" of plant debris such as leaves. Sprinkle a bit of fertilizer over this layer. Repeat the layers, just like making lasagna, until your garden is 18-24" high.
Melinda says you can plant immediately. For seeds, sprinkle compost or potting mix on top of the beds and plant.
