Cute alert: Baby orangutan born at Henry Vilas Zoo

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Henry Vilas Zoo visitors wait no more, as the long awaited birth of a baby orangutan was announced Thursday morning.

First-time parents Kawan and Datu welcomed Keju, pronounced (kay-joo), which is Malay for "cheese" on April 9, but today the birth was officially announced.

The zoo says the birth of Keju is important to the national effort to maintain a population of the Bornean orangutan, which is on the endangered species list.

Infant orangutans spend their first year of life clinging onto their mother and have the second longest infant dependency behind humans.

Staff at the Henry Vilas Zoo will be monitoring baby Keju around the clock and will be wearing a special vest for the infant to hold onto that emulates the mother orangutan.

Thursday at 1:00 p.m. the Henry Vilas Zoo will be holding a media event to introduce baby Keju to the public.

We will have coverage of the event tonight on 27 News at 5 and 6.
