Former UW-Whitewater star waiting for NFL call

Posted: Updated:

For UW-Whitewater receiver Jake Kumerow, being a professional football player has been a life-long dream.

"I've been thinking about the NFL since I was six years old playing flag football. It's just something I think every kid thinks about."

It's a dream so few actually realize. So, with the NFL draft approaching, Kumerow is spending long hours perfecting his craft.

"You can't play at the next level if you're not out here working every single day. You have to work extremely hard on a daily basis because everyone else is doing the same thing."

Kumerow has the added advantage of living with his former collegiate quarterback Matt Behrendt.

"I wake up, go knock on his door and say, 'Hey we're going to throw today. So let's get ready.'"

Behrendt has his own pro motivations. So, he jumps at the chance to help his old buddy prepare for the next level.

"I try to do everything I can to help him. I mean that's my boy. We're roommates"

Kumerow's route to the NFL is not the easiest to travel. Very few can make the jump from Division III. All he wants is a chance to prove himself.

"I'd had people tell me before if you're good enough they'll find you somewhere. Once you're at the next level, no one cares about where you came from. It's all about what you're doing now. Coming from a D3 school, it makes me want to do it even more because less guys have done it. I think if I could be one of the guys to come out of a smaller school, I think that would be very cool. It's definitely a motivator."
