COPY-Community group uses Robinson incident to educate on racism

MADISON (WKOW) -- Nearly one hundred people attend a community group's work shop to use the tragedy of the officer-involved shooting of teen suspect Tony Robinson to better understand the roots of racism in Madison.

Organizers of the group Groundwork staged the event Saturday at Madison's Villager Mall, with the theme, "Justice For Tony."  The session was specifically designed for the white community.

Organizers say the goal of the event was to help attendees self-educate about racial disparities in the community; use acquired knowledge to help educate the broader community; and support people of color.

"A lot of people are here because they want to learn,"  Groundwork's Nell Schaefer says.

"They also have concerns about what's happening here in Madison.  That is the point, to engage in conversation - and sometimes challenging conversation - around white privilege, around issues of racial oppression,"  Schaefer says.

Organizers say Groundwork representatives work with companies and other groups to address racial bias and implement steps to improve work place cultures..
