Local tennis player thrives despite only using right arm

MADISON (WKOW) -

When Christian Voskuil steps on the court, it doesn't take long for the crowd to start whispering.

"I look up at the visiting section of students, and they're all whispering back and forth. They're all looking at each other in awe. It's fun to watch."

A stroke at birth left Voskuil with limited use of the left side of his body. Yet, at age five, he picked up a tennis racket. His coach, Justin Long, wasn't sure what to expect.

"We didn't know how he was going to serve. We didn't know how he was going to hit, particularly how he was going to hit his backhand."

Voskuil adapted and then thrived. The Janesville Craig sophomore serves by balancing the ball on the racket before using the racket to toss the ball in the air. That serve has been proficient enough for him to advance to sectionals for the second straight year. This time he finished third.

"I know a lot of people that are told they can't do what they want to do. I just hope to show people no matter what people say about you, you can do whatever you want."
