Local athletes claim state championships at WIAA track and field meet

 Several local athletes started the WIAA track and field meet with a bang by notching state championships on day one.

In Division 1, the Big Eight Conference dominated the boys 3,200 meters. Madison West's Olin Hacker won the event. He was followed by Verona's Ryan Nameth and La Follette's Finn Gessner.

Local athletes also fared well in the discus events. Platteville's Ryan Weber claimed the title in Division 2. Belmont's Tucker Wedig took the gold in Division 3.

In other field events, Edgerton's Alex Schmidt won the pole vault in Division 2. Nadia Williams won the long jump in Division 2. The Mount Horeb star is also favored in multiple events on Saturday. 

Amy Davis from Edgewood is also hoping for multiple championships. She defended her Division 2 state championship in the 1,600 meters. Brittany Davis from Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg broke the meet record in the 800 meters in Division 3 with a time of 2:13.11. Dakota Kauffman from Boscobel also claimed distance gold by winning the 3,200 meters in Division 3. The Cambridge boys took first in the 3,200 meters relay.

The WIAA state meet will conclude Saturday.
