Van Emburgh Takes Division 1 Singles Titles

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, Wisconsin (WKOW) -- Jake Van Emburgh was outmatched this time last year in the WIAA Boys Tennis State Tournament, falling in three sets in the semifinals for a third place finish. But as a sophomore, Van Emburgh was more than ready.

As Middleton's number one seed, Van Emburgh had to go through five matches before meeting with the same player who eliminated him this time last year, Brookfield East's David Horneffer and the number one seed overall in this years' tournament.

The two would battle deep into set one, with Van Emburgh coming out the victor 7-5, but in the final few points, Horneffer started showing sins of injury. During intermission between sets, the junior would be checked out with a trainer but wouldn't posses the same stamina he had in set one. Van Emburgh would cruise to a 6-1 win and take the Division 1 Singles title.
