Edgewood tennis on a quest for first state title

MADISON (WKOW) -

The Edgewood high school tennis team is on a mission. The Crusaders are set to make a 12th straight appearance at the WIAA Team Tennis State Tournament. They've finished as the state runners-up six times but have never won a state title. Senior Billy O'Brien says the title drought needs to end this week at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

"It would mean everything. We know so many people that have come so close that I feel like we're playing for everyone who's taken second or not quite gotten it done."

Edgewood finished second to University School a year ago. The teams split two meetings this regular season. Senior Charlie Kirsh says the confidence level is very high this time around for Edgewood.

"This is our 12th time qualifying. We've never been able to take the title. I feel like we need one team to take that state championship. I really feel like this is the team to do it."

The Crusaders open state play by facing Notre Dame on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in the Division 2 semifinals. The championship round will begin at 2 p.m.
