Dekker working towards life in NBA

CHICAGO (WKOW) -- 500 shots a day. That's what former Badgers forward Sam Dekker estimates he's been putting up since he began training for the NBA.

"It's been a grind. Time has flown through even since the end of the season," Dekker said.

Jump shots and slam dunks of course.

"It's easier than layups and I just like using my athleticism," Dekker said.

About six days a week Dekker works out at the Fitness Formula Club in downtown Chicago.

"Sometimes you come home and you're just like why did I do that? But all in all it's worth it."

Other days Dekker is traveling, attending pre-draft workouts at NBA team facilities. Dekker's has met with Miami, Oklahoma City, Denver, Phoenix, Charlotte, Detroit, Utah, Atlanta and Sacramento, trying to shoot down any doubts those teams may have about his game.

"If I can be a consistent knock-down shooter and defend, those are things I've been really working on and taken great strides at getting better at," Dekker said.

Projections have Dekker getting selected somewhere in the middle of the first round of this Thursday's NBA Draft.

"Your guess is as good as mine about where we're going to be going that night, but I'm confident that I'll go at a good pick and be a good fit on any team"

A lifetime of work that is about to really pay off.

"When you're little and you write those things in class when they ask you what you want to be when you grow up, I would always say NBA player, Dekker said.

"I'm just going to try and enjoy it. Sit back, relax and I'll be excited when my name gets called. I'm blessed to be in this situation and I'm going to be a good face and represent myself well anywhere I go."
