Madison police ready for Shake the Lake crowds

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison police are getting ready for big crowds downtown.

Extra officers will be on duty Saturday to make sure the event runs smoothly.

It's expected to be smaller and more manageable than last year.

John Nolen Drive will be closed from Broom Street to Williamson Street, starting at 6 a.m. Saturday.

Traffic is likely to be heavy, especially after the fireworks, but since the downtown ramps are spread out, police say it shouldn't be a problem.

"We kind of believe the traffic flow will be similar to a Badger football game day, where it's heavy traffic but it usually flows on its own," Capt. Carl Gloede told 27 News.

Shake the Lake activities start at 5 p.m. Saturday. Fireworks will begin around ten.

John Nolen Drive will reopen early Sunday morning, once the event is torn down.
