Ready, Aim, Fire : Wisconsin Dells Archery Shooting For World Title

Posted: Updated:

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wisconsin -- All you need is a bow, some arrows, and a target. Good aim comes in handy as well. And the Wisconsin Dells archery team has it all. 28 kids are heading Nashville, Tennessee, for the World Championships later this month, all with their sights on bringing home the title.

The Dells team was started through the elementary and high school programs nearly a decade ago. Coach Brian Hartley has been at the helm ever since the beginning.

"It's been pretty interesting to watch it grow throughout the years. First year, there's a handful of teams that were cooperating in it. Today, like this past year at the state tournament, we had almost 2,000 kids compete."

Their highest placement ha been a second-place finish at World, but 5th grader James Sampson wants to become the first to take the top spot. The soft-spoken Sampson recently broke the elementary record in the state of Wisconsin by shooting a 285 out of 300.

The World Championship takes place July 23-25.
