MADISON (WKOW) -- Multiple calls from motorists were made to the Dane County 911 Center just after 7:30 Wednesday night, reporting a sport motorcycle and a modified Volkswagen were drag racing on E. Washington Avenue.

Witnesses reported the two were driving erratically and at high speeds.  Minutes later, the same two vehicles were reported to have been involved in a crash near Seventh Street.

Officers were told the VW attempted to pass the 19-year-old motorcyclist on the left, after leaving a red light at the intersection of E. Wash and Milwaukee Street.  The right rear of the vehicle clipped the cycle causing the operator to lose control and was then thrown from the motorcycle.  He struck a double posted street sign in the median and came to rest in the outbound lanes of E. Washington.  The cyclist was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.  He was wearing a helmet.

The 23-year-old driver of the VW was cited for reckless driving and racing.  He faces more than $800 in fines.  The motorcyclist was also cited for racing.  he faces fines of more than $300.
