Badger Wajda Takes Wisconsin State Amateur

Posted: Updated:

ERIN HILLS, Wisconsin -- Eddie Wajda would much rather people forgot about last year's Wisconsin State Amateur, but this year's Championship makes it all worth it.

In the 2014 Championship, Wajda, a rising sophomore at University of Wisconsin, was disqualified after submitting an incorrect scorecard after the third round. This year, not only did he work on his math, but he also worked on his putting game on his way to his first Amateur title.

Wajda assumed the lead of the tournament from the par 4 15th, after dropping in a smooth birdie. Heading into the final hole, the 19 year-old was all smiles despite Marquette's Patrick Sanchez clipping at his heels, two strokes back. Wajda would end up missing his par putt from three feet out, giving Sanchez, who was one shot back, a chance to tie it on the 18th. However, there would be no sudden death playoff, as Sanchez would hit his ball five feet past the cup.

The miss would give Wajda the one-stoke victory at two under on the day and five over overall.
