Smith takes over at Madison Memorial

MADISON (WKOW) -

Adam Smith isn't new to the high school football coaching scene. However, after spending seven seasons as the head coach of the Madison Mustangs, the new head coach at Madison Memorial High School admits he has to make some adjustments.

"It is a big transition being out seven years. The biggest thing is just the new rules."

Smith is adjusting on the fly after getting hired in December. That hiring process involved a sit-down session with Barry Alvarez.

"It was really reassuring because I just haven't been at this level in a while. I just wanted to make sure we're doing things right. According to Barry, we are. That's always a good sign."

Alvarez has a personal interest in the program. His grandson, Jake Ferguson, is one of the Spartans' stars. The junior linebacker and receiver is drawing interest from several Division 1 schools. He already has an offer from Wisconsin. Ferguson's older brother, Joe, is on the Badgers' roster. So, Jake is feeling a little pressure to carry on the family tradition.

"Yeah. It's really tough because I've got family and a lot of connections there, but at the same time I want to go where fits me the best.I still have to think about it, and it's still going to be in the back of my head the entire season."

Ferguson and the other varsity returners are hoping it will be a season to remember. The Spartans only won three games a season ago. However, the hiring of a new coaching staff has sparked optimism for players such as senior Jack Peterson.

"They're making it feel like our goal isn't just to have a good season. It's to come out as Big Eight champs."
