WAUNAKEE (WKOW) -- The Waunakee football program has gone two consecutive seasons without making a trip to Camp Randall Stadium for the D2 state championship game. For most schools that's a short absence, for Waunakee that's considered a drought. The Warriors have made 19 consecutive trips to the postseason and from 2009-2012 ended their season in the title game, winning three of four state championships. In 2014, Waunakee came one play short of getting back to Camp Randall, losing to Waukesha West in Level 4 of the playoffs 21-20.
"We all dream about going up there, ever since we were in fourth grade. We just wanted to play at state because we saw all the older guys do it and we just want to do it and write our own legacy here," Waunakee senior Sam Kalscheur said.
"We think back to all the good teams, 2009. '10, '11 and how they all went to [Camp] Randall and we just try to do what they did because they did everything right to get to Randall so we just try to form off them," Waunakee senior Sam Decorah said.
The Warriors open their 2015 season Friday, August 21 against Madison Edgewood.
