UPDATE (WKOW) -- Green Bay police say two people were found dead inside the vehicle that crashed into a tire shop, which then went up in flames.
GREEN BAY (WBAY) -- Green Bay police are investigating the scene of a tire shop fire after a vehicle found inside the building showed damage consistent with a crash.
Emergency crews found the vehicle inside the rubble of Hernandez Auto and Tire on N. Irwin Ave. after fire engulfed the building early Thursday morning.
Investigators say the vehicle–which appears to be a small truck–was traveling west on Radisson St. when it jumped a curb and crashed into the back of the building. Police have not been able to determine if there are any victims in the vehicle.
The building is structurally unsound, which is a challenge for officers trying to identify possible victims. City engineers are on scene to help officers safely enter the building.
The fire also proved to be challenging for Green Bay Metro firefighters who had to use foam to douse the burning tires.
Drivers are being asked to avoid the area of the 1800 block of N. Irwin Ave. to East Shore Drive and Radisson St. between N. Webster Ave. and N. Baird St.
Fire crews and investigators expect to be on scene for most of the day.
