Carry On, Clement!

MADISON, Wisconsin (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Badgers know a thing or two about traditions. There's the Fifth Quarter, the classic "Jump Around" played at the start of the fourth quarter, and of course, throwing up the motion "W". Then there's the long standing tradition of solid Badger running backs.

With three former Badger backs in the NFL, another makes his way through the ranks: junior Corey Clement. In his first two seasons as a Badger, Clement rushed for nearly 1500 yards and 16 touchdowns, averaging 7 yards per carry, despite never being the starter. Now, it's his time to shine.

"It feels great, the time is already here. Before I know it, I'll be down in Arlington, Texas, just ready to kick off this college gameday."

After sitting behind James White and Melvin Gordon the past two seasons, Clement has been mentally preparing since day one. This year he finally holds the keys to the Badgers running game, an honor he says with pride.

"Not many people can hold the torch that I've been passed down from Melvin. You just want to take the moment in and make a name for yourself."

Quarterback Joel Stave has been apart of the Badgers since 2011 and he knows a good running back when he sees one.

"I think Corey is the same way. He's a very good runner. I think he's very good in the pass game when he's coming out of the backfield and catching the ball. I think he can carry on that tradition of good backs here. He knows how talented he is. I know it's been tough for him in the past couple years being behind the incredible running backs that have come before him. I think he's excited for the role of kind of being the premier running back."

Fellow running back Dare Ogunbowale seconds that.

"Corey definitely has his strengths. There's a lot of strengths that he has. It's gonna be exciting, he's gonna have a great season. It's gonna be exciting to watch him."

The Badgers will open their season September 5 in Arlington, Texas, to face No. 3 Alabama. Their first home game will be the following weekend when they host Miami of Ohio.
