MADISON, Wis. – A star-studded performance under the lights of Camp Randall Stadium did not go unnoticed for Wisconsin redshirt freshman RB Taiwan Deal, who earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors on Monday.

Deal is the first Badger to be recognized by the conference this season and the first freshman to claim the honor since junior Corey Clement earned the accolade on Nov. 18, 2013, his second award of that season.

In his first career start, Deal rushed for a career-high 147 yards and two touchdowns in Wisconsin’s 28-0 shutout victory over Hawai’i on Saturday. Both 2-yard touchdown runs came in the first half.

The Capitol Heights, Maryland, native finished off the Badgers’ longest scoring drive of the season (97 yards) with a 2-yard plunge in the first quarter. It marked the Badgers’ longest scoring drive since Montee Ball capped off a 97-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run against Northern Illinois on Sept. 17, 2011.

Deal’s efforts helped Wisconsin produce its 36th 100-yard rushing game since the start of the 2013 season. Deal helped the Badgers gain a season-high 512 yards of total offense, including 326 rushing yards.

It marked the first 100-yard rushing game for Deal, surpassing his previous career high of 84 yards against Troy on Sept. 19. He also recorded a career-high 26 attempts in the win.

Deal is averaging 72.5 yards per game and 4.7 yards per carry to go along with four touchdowns in his debut season.
