Badgers men's hockey opens season with a tie

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, Wisconsin (WKOW) -- Coming off a disappointing 4-26-5 season last year, the men's hockey team is on a mission to prove what they can do in the Big Ten this time around.

They opened the season at the Kohl Center with familiar foe Northern Michigan. The Badgers were the first to notch a goal off a power play in the second period from sophomore Jake Linhart. The Wildcats would respond and add two goals in the third period and would hold the lead till the final minute, when junior Grant Breese knocking in the game-tying goal.

Neither team would score in overtime and the Badgers would take the tie to open the year. The Wildcats would win the shootout 2-1, but it will not count in NCAA standings.

The Wildcats have opened with the Badgers the past five seasons. Minus last years' season opener in Alaska, UW has also opener the year with NMU, who held a 5-3 series lead coming into Friday night.
