Committee begins review of Madison Police Department

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW)-- At a time when the policies of police departments are under intense scrutiny, Madison is taking a proactive approach to see how its police force can improve.

The Madison Police Department Policy and Procedure Review Committee met for the first time Tuesday night. The 14 members of the community, representing different demographics, will review the Madison Police Department's policies and procedures.

“It is a big task and I think everyone at the table does have a passion for the community,” said Christian Albouras, the co-chair of the committee. “And we wanna service the people of Madison well.”

The goal is to come up with a series of recommendations and possible changes to the department's policy

“It's extremely important, if you think about the times, the things that are happening in the community, from Tony Robinson to other police incidents,” said Anthony Cooper, another committee member.

Some of the areas the committee will review include racial disparities, implicit bias and use of force. The group will review data and hear from experts both within and outside of the police department.

“We're gonna be working closely with MPD and gather information,” Albouras said.

Capt. Mary Schauf will serve as the department's liaison to the committee,

“To me this is an opportunity for us to engage in that continuous improvement with the input from the community that we serve,” Capt. Schauf said. “It's not really an us, them, it's about all of us together working for public safety. That's really what we're all about.”

Another role of this committee will be helping the city hire an outside expert or experts to review the police departments culture, training and procedures. This city committee will then use those findings as part of its review. The goal is to have the recommendations complete by December of 2016.
