Cichy comes up big in Holiday Bowl, named defensive MVP

SAN DIEGO, CA (WKOW) -- Jack Cichy spent the entire first half of the Holiday Bowl inside the Badgers locker room. Cichy was serving out the suspension he received in the team's previous game against Minnesota for a targeting penalty.

"It obviously sucked being in the locker room when my team was out there," Cichy said.

"I kind of feel like I let them down. I wanted to be out there with them. It was awful being in there, I was talking to myself, yelling at the TV."

When the locker room doors opened out of halftime, and Cichy finally hit the field, he came out with a vengeance. Cichy sacked Cody Kessler on three consecutive plays in the third quarter. He also pressured the quarterback on Sojourn Shelton's late interception en route to being named the game's defensive MVP.

"You put Jack in on the inside an he can make moves on those backs one-on-one, there's no chance. It was great," Badgers linebacker Joe Schobert said.

"I've never seen back-to-back-to-back sacks, it was fun to watch," Badgers linebacker Vince Biegel said.

Over three seasons, Cichy's worked his way up into the Badgers lineup. Starting as a walk-on, Cichy may just be the Badgers next star in the making.

Being behind Vince [Biegel], Joe [Schobert] and even my freshman year Army [Ethan Armstrong] and Chris Borland, I think it's only helped me. So you can look at it as I'm not playing, this sucks or you can kind of look at it as an opportunity to grow and I think I've taking the opportunity and I've grown a lot and I've got a long way to go," Cichy said.
