Badgers honor Black History Month, former coach with retro jerseys

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, Wis. (Per UW Athletics) – In honor of Black History Month and former Wisconsin head coach Bill Cofield, the Badgers will be wearing special throwback Adidas uniforms several times in the month of February. UW will be wearing the uniforms modeled after those worn in 1976, Cofield’s first year as head coach in Madison.

“It was originally planned with Adidas that we would wear the throwback uniforms for one game in February, but our players overwhelmingly requested that we honor Black History Month by wearing the uniforms for the entire month,” head coach Greg Gard explained. “I was proud of their passion for the subject and fully supported expanding our recognition of Black History Month.”

The first African-American head coach in either basketball or football in Big Ten history, Cofield coached at Wisconsin for six seasons, from 1976 to 1982. Cofield passed away in 1983 at the age of 43 after coaching four future NBA draft picks, Wes Matthews, Joe Chrnelich, Claude Gregory and Larry Petty, in Madison.

The Badgers’ throwback jerseys will feature “Wisconsin” in block lettering, while the team’s shorts will feature Bucky Badger on the leg.

Wisconsin will also celebrate Jesse Owens with the adidas Black History Month footwear. An American sports and cultural hero, Owens is one of the greatest athletes in history, winning four gold medals in track and field at the 1936 Olympic Games.
