Badger breaks four-minute mile barrier, sets new school record

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) -- For passionate runners, breaking the four-minute mile is a major accomplishment. For Wisconsin sophomore Morgan McDonald, he can cross it off his bucket list.

Before the Armory Collegiate Invitational, McDonald had only run the mile-long race a couple of times. The last time he ran the mile was at the same meet the year prior, clocking in at 4:03.81.

Flash forward to now.

After a week of training with teammate redshirt senior Austin Mudd, head coach Mick Byrne threw the Australian in the "deep end" to see if he would sink or swim in the highly competitive mile long race. McDonald did not sink. Instead, he went on to a fourth place finish in a highly competitive field, racing at 3:57.83. That time beat his previous PR by six seconds and set a new Wisconsin record, replacing that of teammate Mudd, who was just a tenth of second slower than McDonald's.

McDonald joins eight other Badgers in the elite four-minute mile club.

He returns to the track this weekend at the Iowa State Classic, where he will compete in the 3000 meter race.
