MADISON (WKOW) -- For any of you planning to say "I do" -- take note. Wedding planning is a billion dollar business, and the average cost of a wedding is up to about $30,000 now.
According to Angie's List, couples who get tripped up walking down the aisle are usually those who didn't have a well-researched, detailed plan in place.
Angie recommends hiring a wedding planner, but knowing what you're getting into. "Hiring a wedding planner will really reduce your stress around your special day, but be sure to get your contract in writing and understand exactly what's going to be done and how much it's going to cost," says Angie Hicks.
A wedding planner typically costs anywhere from $500 to several thousand dollars, depending on the involvement. Angie says you should look for someone who will stick to your budget and offer good communication. Some planners even offer discounts on things like florists, photographers and venues.
A newlywed couple who Angie talked to suggests picking the venue first, not the date, and getting to know your vendors, so they capture your personality.
Angie also cautions that even with help from professionals, like a wedding planner, things can still go wrong. Venues can go out of business, and photographers can get sick or show up late. Wedding insurance may be a good idea if you've invested thousands of dollars, just make sure you fully understand what's covered and what isn't.
