MADISON (WKOW) -- How much will you be spending on your Valentine this year? A new study by Bankrate.com tallies the average cost of a traditional Valentine's Day at more than $500.00!
Bankrate.com's "Be My Valentine Index" researched the average cost of Valentine's Day items to see what the day costs for most Americans. The items included a box of chocolates ($15.11), diamond earrings ($323.26), a dozen roses ($41.66), dinner for two ($80.46) and a bottle of champagne ($51.54).

"Be My Valentine Index." Prices for all items but the bottle of champagne and the dinner were obtained from multiple retail websites Jan. 26-29, 2016, and were averaged. The average price for a bottle of champagne comes from Nielsen and the average price of dinner is derived from data provided by NPD Group. The average cost of each item in the Be My Valentine Index has been rounded to 2 decimal places, but the Index total is not rounded.
