Monona Grove looking to repeat at state swim and dive meet

MONONA (WKOW) -

The Monona Grove boys swim and dive team may be a bit smaller this year, but their goals are just as lofty. The squad is looking to repeat as the WIAA Division 2 state champions this weekend in Madison.

"It's a little harder this year because some of the guys were unknowns," says head coach Kelly Chadesh. "They didn't know how they were going to perform. Now, there's huge targets on their backs. So, it brings on a little extra stress that we haven't quite felt before. It's a little different."

The rest of the state will be gunning for Monona Grove. The Silver Eagles return several individual state title contenders, including Ben McDade. The sophomore won two individual titles as a freshman.

"The only way to one-up it is you've got to win them again. It's not guaranteed. Obviously, I'm going to shoot for it, but there's a lot more pressure than last year."

McDade and his teammates will attempt to retain their crowns on Friday at the UW Natatorium.
