Lady Norskies honor sidelined senior, defeat Reedsburg 52-44

DEFOREST, Wis. (WKOW) -- Senior night has always been a special occasion to honor a teams' senior stars. But for DeForest senior Cassidy Byrd, the event carries a whole new meaning.

Byrd has always been a major part of the Lady Norskies basketball team, helping them to a Division 2 runner-up finish as a sophomore and leading the team in nearly every statistical category as a junior. Byrd was heavily recruited by Concordia University Saint Paul and happily signed this past November. Three days after her signing, she broke her foot at a team bonding event, ending her high school career.

Heading into their senior night game against Reedsburg, head coach Jerry Schwenn made an agreement with Reedsburg's head coach Mark Simon, allowing Byrd to score the Lady Norskies first basket before heading back to the bench. The Beavers scored the first basket of the game, but Byrd would find herself scoring the next off a left-handed layup. The crowd erupted, giving the senior a standing ovation as she made her way off the court.

The Lady Norskies went on to win 52-4 over Reedsburg.
