Manure spill stretches 2 miles to trout stream

Posted: Updated:

FENNIMORE (AP) -- A stream of manure from a large-scale dairy farm in Grant County has flowed two miles into a creek stocked with trout.

Authorities say they're not sure how much waste was released from the farm's 1-million-gallon manure pit near Fennimore. The owner of Misty Morning Dairy notified the state Department of Natural Resources Thursday that a hose coupling failed during the night and released a stream of waste that flowed for hours.

DNR spokesman George Althoff tells the State Journal that crews set up berms to capture the spill, but it had already reached Castle Rock Creek, which is stocked annually with trout. The DNR will monitor the creek for any fish kills.

Neighbors have been advised to drink bottled water for now and test their wells.
